Creed II: The Album Cover Art

Overview

Creed II: The Album is a soundtrack to the Creed II movie released in November 2018. Producer Mike Will Made-it hired me as creative director for the album covers and to also design multiple promotional assets for the countdown to the album’s release as well as apparel for the album release party in Atlanta, GA.

Front Cover Art

The movie production company and the record label provided several images and other marketing materials. With the multiple assets to comb through, I settled on making Adonis Creed the main focus. I experimented with different color schemes and typographic layouts while keeping the design minimal.

Ultimately, we decided to go with the emotional photo of Adonis on his knees in black & white with the bold album title. The hint of gold in Mike Will Made-it’s name was a personal request from him.

Back Cover Art

The hanging black boxing gloves are a representation of ruggedness, similar to the city of Philadelphia. The set of two gloves symbolizes the number two in the Creed II movie title. Gold gradient text identical to the front cover overlays each artist featured on the album.

Pivot & Improvise

Initially, the boxing gloves used on the back cover were supposed to be for the front cover. However, after multiple conversations, using a licensed image of boxing gloves wouldn't work with the team's vision. Therefore, I needed to purchase a set of boxing gloves to use as a base for image manipulation for the following step in Photoshop.

Photoshop & Its Magic

I began redrawing the wrist straps, adding glares and shadows to make the image look as realistic as possible. Next, I hung a set of shoelaces on a wall to create the illusion that the gloves were hanging from a wall. Finally, the idea began to come together.
